Taste Tasmania

This Moorilla Estateday of fine food and wine will begin with the group being transported by coach to Moorilla, one of the oldest wineries in Tasmania. Established in 1958, Moorilla sits on a private peninsula on the Derwent River just fifteen minutes from Hobart.

Moorilla is home to the world-reknowned MONA gallery, the Moorilla Museum of Antiquities and the Ether Building art gallery, as well as the Source Restaurant and Moo Brew brewery. The tour group will sample four Moorilla wines and beers, including the iconic Moo Brew beer. A selection of fine Tasmanian cheeses matched to the wines will also be provided.

From Moorilla we will travel through the Coal River Wine Route to Richmond. This delightful town has no fewer than 45 buildings listed on the National Estate, including the oldest Roman Catholic church in Australia, the oldest bridge in Australia and the oldest and best-preserved colonial gaol in Australia.

The group will then head out to Barilla Bay to sample deliciously fresh Tasmanian oysters. A 45 minute tour of the farm shows how the oysters are grown and demonstrates the importance of Tasmania’s clean green environment.

The tour will finish at the Barilla Bay Restaurant. Surrounded by fully landscaped gardens and overlooking the spectacular scenery of Barilla Bay, the casual atmosphere of the restaurant will allow the group to relax and enjoy a totally Tasmanian experience, featuring some of the state's freshest produce and premium wines, before traveling back to Hobart by coach.

Rural And Historical Hobart

Only Richmond Bridge, Richmonda 20 minute drive from Hobart, the vineyards of the Coal River Valley, between Cambridge and the historic village of Richmond, are acclaimed for the quality of their cool-climate wines. Pinot noir, chardonnay, riesling and sauvignon blanc are the classic varieties here. Many of the vineyards open their cellar doors for tastings and sales and there are several excellent vineyard restaurants.

The Coal River Valley Wine Route makes an ideal a half or full-day tour, depending on how long you choose to linger amongst the vines. Your group will travel along the Coal River Wine Route, exploring local wineries such as Coal Valley Vineyard, Meadowbank Estate, Puddleduck Vineyard and Pooley Wines (Belmont or Cooinda Vale Vineyards), on the way to Richmond.

Set in gently undulating country on the banks of the Coal River, Richmond has no fewer than 45 buildings listed on the National Estate. Highlights include Australia’s oldest bridge, St John’s Church (the oldest Roman Catholic church in Australia), Richmond Gaol (the oldest colonial gaol in Australia) and Bridge St, an integrated street of historic buildings.

Why Historical Hotels Tournot spend an afternoon discovering the history and myths behind some of Tasmania's best-known hotels while enjoying our best local beers and wines? Mt Field National Park

Travel Mount Field National Parkby coach through the magnificent Derwent Valley to Mount Field National Park, one of Tasmania's most loved National Parks. The park has a wide variety of scenic features and wildlife. Few other national parks in Australia offer such a diversity in vegetation, ranging from tall swamp gum forests and massive tree ferns at the base of the mountain, through rainforest along the Lake Dobson Road, to alpine vegetation at the higher elevations.

Activities available in the area include:

  • Walk to Russell Falls, the most photographed waterfall in Tasmania. This is an easy walk through a mixed forest comprising towering swamp gums, dogwood, myrtle, musk and tall tree ferns.

  • Walk the Tall Tree circuit – a spectacular forest of swamp gums (the tallest flowering plant on Earth). The largest trees here were growing when Abel Tasman first sighted Tasmania in 1642.

  • Salmon Ponds Heritage Hatchery and Gardens – the oldest salmon farm in the Southern Hemisphere. Includes walks in the original English parkland ‘leisure garden’ of superb trees, hedges and lawns, as well as the Museum of Trout Fishing
